USS Sphinx (ARL-24)
Biography
The USS Sphinx was laid down in 1944 as a United States Navy LST-542 tank landing ship. On May 10, 1945, it was converted to an Achelous-class repair ship, which repaired landing craft during World War II. The USS Sphinx was assigned to Join Task Force 1, Task Unit 1.8.1 Service Group—Repair and Service Unit for Operation Crossroads and decommissioned on May 24, 1947.
The USS Sphinx was recommissioned on November 3, 1950, and spent the Korean War in the UN Summer-Fall offensive campaign in 1952. It was then decommissioned on January 30, 1956.
On December 16, 1967, the USS Sphinx was recommissioned, and the Vietnam Tour was spent in several campaigns from 1968 to 1971. On September 30, 1971, it was decommissioned once again to be recommissioned in 1985 and then decommissioned again in 1989.
The USS Sphinx earned one battle star for the Korean War and eight campaign stars for Vietnam War service.
