Biography
The USS Mississippi (BB-41) played a significant role in World II, participating in numerous Pacific campaigns including operations against Kiska Island, the Gilbert Islands, Kwajalein, Peleliu, Leyte, and Okinawa. During the war, she provided crucial shore bombardment support for amphibious landings and engaged in naval battles, notably participating in the Battle of Surigao Strait. The battleship survived two turret explosions during the war, one in November 1943 that claimed 43 lives, and was present in Tokyo Bay for Japan's formal surrender on September 2, 1945.
