Biography

The USS Callaway (APA-35) was a Bayfield-class attack transport commissioned into the U.S. Navy in April 1943 and used to carry troops, vehicles, and equipment for amphibious operations during World War II. She participated in the Normandy invasion on 6 June 1944, where she transported and landed assault troops on Omaha Beach. After completing operations in the European Theater, Callaway was transferred to the Pacific, where she supported amphibious landings during the invasions of Iwo Jima in February 1945 and Okinawa in April 1945. Throughout the war, her primary duties included transporting troops, conducting landing operations, and evacuating casualties, and she remained in active service until the end of hostilities in 1945.

Abstract

The Seymour Hofstetter Collection comprises 56 large-format, matted photographic prints documenting U.S. Coast Guard and Navy activities during World War II, with an emphasis on naval operations and amphibious warfare in the Pacific Theater. An additional empty storage box with original belted straps and a plastic sleeve containing a blank note are also present.
