Biography
The 1st Cavalry Division was deployed to the Southwest Pacific in 1943 and participated in key campaigns under General Douglas MacArthur, including the liberation of the Philippines. It saw intence combat on islands such as Leyte and Luzon, where soldiers fought through difficult jungle terrain and strong Japanese resistance. Notably, the divisionw as among the first American forces to enter Manila in early 1945, helping to free civilian internees at Santo Tomas University.
