Biography

The USS Rockingham (APA-229) was an attack transport ship that served with the U.S. Navy during the final stages of World War II. Commissioned in 1945, the ship was designed to carry troops, equipment, and landing craft to support large-scale assaults on Japanese-held islands. Following the end of hostilities, the Rockingham took part in occupation duties and helped transport returning servicemen home as part of Operation Magic Carpet.
