USS Ohio (BB-12)
Biography
The USS Ohio (BB-12) was a pre-dreadnaught battleship of the United States Navy commissioned in 1904. Built as part of the Illinois-class, she served during a period of growing U.S. naval power and primarily operated along the Atlantic coast and in training and readiness exercises that helped professionalize the expanding fleet. During World War I, Ohio continued to serve in a training and support capacity, helping prepare naval personnel rather than engaging in front-line combat operations overseas. After the war, she was decommissioned in 1919 and eventually sold for scrap in 1923.
The Ohio also played an early role in the career of Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, who served aboard her as a junior officer shortly after graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy.
