Biography

The USS Massachusetts (BB-2) was an early pre-dreadnought battleship of the United States Navy, commissioned in 1896 as part of the Navy's first generation of modern steel capital ships designed for coastal defense and fleet engagement. SHe operated primarily in the North Atlantic Squadron and later the Atlantic Fleet, participating in training exercises and gunnery practice. By the time of World War I, Massachusetts was already obselete and had been decommissioned in 1910, after which she was used as a target ship and ultimately sunk.
