USS Whipple (DD-15)
Biography
The USS Whipple (DD-15) was an early U.S. Navy destroyer commissioned in 1903 as part of the Navy’s first class of ocean-going destroyers, designed for speed, scouting, and torpedo attack in support of the battle fleet. In the years before World War I, she operated primarily along the U.S. East Coast and in Caribbean waters, participating in training exercises, fleet maneuvers, and readiness patrols that helped refine early destroyer tactics. During World War I, Whipple was deployed for convoy escort and anti-submarine patrol duties in the Atlantic. After the war, she was decommissioned in 1919 and sold for scrap in 1920.
