USS Baltimore (C-3)
Biography
The USS Baltimore (C-3) was a United States Navy protected cruiser commissioned in 1890. During the Spanish-American War, Baltimore played a supporting role in Asiatic operations and is most notably associated with the Battle of Manila Bay, where she helped secure American naval dominance in the Philippines following Commodore George Dewey’s victory. In the years that followed, she served in a variety of peacetime roles, including training exercises and showing the flag abroad as part of America’s expanding global presence. During World War I, she continued in secondary service as a training and patrol vessel as newer cruisers took on frontline duties. Decommissioned in 1922, she was later sunk as a target ship in 1942.
