USS Rainbow (AS-7)
Biography
The USS Rainbow (AS-7) was a submarine tender of the United States Navy commissioned in 1928, designed to provide logistical support, maintenance, and crew services to submarines operating far from major naval bases. Built during the interwar period, Rainbow played an important role in sustaining U.S. submarine operations in the Pacific, helping extend the reach and endurance of undersea forces during a time of rapid development in submarine warfare doctrine. During World War II, she initially supported submarine operations in the Philippines and the broader western Pacific, but as Japanese advances threatened Allied positions, she was ordered to withdraw and continued her service in safer rear-area locations. After the war, Rainbow was decommissioned in 1946 and eventually sold for scrap in 1952.
