 Organization

Biography

USS Chenango (CVE-28) was a Bogue-class escort aircraft carrier in service with the United States Navy during World War II. Commissioned on 20 June 1942 after conversion from the fleet oiler USS Chenango (AO-29), she initially operated in the Atlantic and participated in Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of French North Africa in November 1942, during which she ferried and launched Army Air Forces P-40 aircraft in support of landings at Casablanca. Following subsequent refit and reassignment, she was transferred to the Pacific Theater, where she performed aircraft ferrying, convoy escort, and antisubmarine warfare duties. Chenango supported operations in the central and western Pacific, including logistical and replenishment functions for carrier task forces during major island campaigns. She was decommissioned on 14 May 1946 and placed in reserve before being struck from the Naval Vessel Register in 1959.
