Biography
Activated 25 February 1943 at Camp Mackall, North Carolina, under the command of Maj. Gen. Joseph M. Swing. The division trained in ground and airborne tactics in the continental United States before deploying to the Pacific Theater, sailing from San Francisco. It entered combat on Leyte in 1944 and subsequently participated in the Luzon Campaign, conducting a parachute assault on Tagaytay Ridge in February 1945 and, later that month, a combined airborne-amphibious raid that liberated internees held at the Los Baños camp. The division also took part in operations to reduce Japanese positions in southern Luzon and conducted its final large-scale combat action of the war at Aparri.
