USS Pintado (SSN-672)
Biography
USS Pintado (SSN-672) was a short-hull Sturgeon-class nuclear-powered attack submarine of the United States Navy, built at Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Vallejo, California. Her keel was laid on October 27, 1967, she was launched on August 16, 1969, and she was commissioned on September 11, 1971, with former crew members of the WWII submarine USS Pintado (SS-387) reportedly attending her launching. The name was reassigned to her in 1966 from the earlier boat, which had been reclassified AGSS-387 and was then struck from the Naval Register. Homeported in San Diego, she made operational deployments in the Pacific during the Cold War, including a deployment to the Indian Ocean that ended with her return to San Diego in February 1980, and she operated under polar ice. In 1977 she was photographed off San Diego carrying the Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle DSRV-1 Mystic. She was decommissioned on February 26, 1998.
