Biography

Henry J. Cates Jr. was born on January 7, 1915, in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1943, he was drafted and received basic training at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana. In 1944, he was stationed in New Guinea, serving as a technical sergeant responsible for water purification with the 1307 Engineers General Service Regiment. By 1946, Cates transferred to the 1759 Special Service Battalion and moved to Batangas Bay. He was honorably discharged in 1947 and returned to his work with Robert and Company Engineers and Architects.
