Biography

Sandor C. Klein (1912–1995) was an American painter born in New York City whose work spanned figurative subjects, portraits, and scenes in oil and other media; his paintings have appeared at auction and are held in museum collections. He studied at the National Academy of Design and won a Pulitzer Prize for painting at age eighteen, after which he continued training in Europe including Paris, Budapest, Vienna, and Rome. Klein served as a combat artist for the United States Coast Guard during World War II and later received commissions to paint portraits of military officials, with several of his works now in the collection of the United States Air Force. Examples of his work, such as American Farm Hand (1937) and Coiffeur (a lithograph), are part of institutional collections such as the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
