Biography

Philip Arthur Wilheit was a U.S. Marine Corps Reserve captain born in Atlanta, Georgia, who served with the Right Assault Company, Third Battalion, First Marine Division during World War II. On December 26, 1943, while fighting Japanese forces at Cape Gloucester, New Britain, he played a key role in a successful assault on enemy positions. He was killed in action during the engagement and was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for his extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty. He was later buried with full military honors in Augusta, Georgia.
