Biography

Joseph Anthony Terzi was a U.S. Marine Corps captain from New York and a 1941 graduate of Niagara University who served with Company K, Third Battalion, First Marine Division during World War II. An accomplished student-athlete in college, he joined the Marines after graduation and quickly distinguished himself in combat, earning the Silver Star for gallantry at Guadalcanal in 1942. On December 26, 1943, during the assault on Cape Gloucester, New Britain, he led his company in a determined attack against heavily defended Japanese positions and was killed in action. For his leadership and heroism, he was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross, along with the Silver Star and Purple Heart. He is buried at the Manila American Cemetery, and his legacy is honored both in the Pacific, where Terzi Point bears his name, and at Niagara University, where campus buildings were dedicated in recognition of his sacrifice.
