Biography

Lawrence Beall Smith was an American painter and illustrator whose artistic career was closely connected to the events of World War II. Born in 1909, Smith became known for his realistic and carefully detailed paintings, many of which documented military life and wartime experiences. During World War II, he served as a combat artist for the United States Coast Guard, traveling with military personnel and recording scenes of naval operations, training exercises, and daily life during the conflict. His artwork combined technical accuracy with a strong sense of atmosphere, helping preserve visual records of the war from the perspective of service members at sea.
