Biography

William Burt Lee, Jr. was a Photographer’s Mate First Class who served aboard the U.S.S. Chenango (CVE-28) between 1942 and 1945. For a period of time in September 1945, Lee, Jr. was stationed in or around Nagasaki and was tasked with taking photographs of the destruction done to the city by the atomic bomb. Between September and October 1945, Lee, Jr. served as a part of the United States occupation of South Korea.

The William Burt Lee, Jr. Collection is a collection of photographs taken and compiled by PhoM 1/c William Burt Lee, Jr during his time aboard the U.S.S. Chenango (CVE-28) between 1944 and 1945, Japanese life at the conclusion of the war, the aftermath of the Nagasaki atomic bombing, and the American occupation of South Korea in 1945.
