USS Missouri Japanese Surrender Ceremony: Photographs and Participant Notes
Scope and Contents
This folder contains photographs and handwritten notes documenting military personnel’s experiences during the Japanese surrender ceremony aboard the USS Missouri on 2 September 1945. Included are materials from Thomas J. Albergo, Captain Fitzhugh Lee, William D. Allbright, Admiral Forrest Sherman, James E. Hammond, and John Basil Kopcha. The folder also contains photographs and notes from Robert E. Murphy, Earl Thomas Reader, an unidentified serviceman, and senior officers including General Douglas MacArthur and Major General L. H. Van Oyen. Several mounted photographs bear autographs and inscriptions addressed to Harmon L. Graff from officers such as Colonel Laurence M. Crosgrove, Captain Douglas C. Plate, Captain Harold D. Krick, General Douglas MacArthur, and Rear Admiral Edwin J. Layton. Additional boards feature collages and ceremony photographs accompanied by notes from Joseph Stilwell, William Frederic Marquat, and Hugo E. Rueter.
