Letters Between William H. Sager, Elizabeth Mopsik Sager, Family, and Friends, 1941

 Sub-Series

Scope and Contents

From the Series:

This series contains extensive correspondence among William H. Sager, his wife Elizabeth Mopsik Sager, and members of their extended family, spanning their courtship, marriage, wartime separation, and postwar transition during and after World War II. The materials document William’s military service in the U.S. Marine Corps and related Army and Navy assignments across the United States and overseas, including training, travel, hospitalization, administrative duties, and deployments to Guadalcanal and China. Letters and accompanying materials describe daily military life, such as routines, inspections, training exercises, camp conditions, medical treatment (including recurring malaria), financial arrangements, logistics, and mail delays, alongside broader reflections on wartime events, censorship, morale, and the end of the war. Interwoven throughout the correspondence is a sustained focus on family life and personal relationships, particularly William and Elizabeth’s evolving marriage, her pregnancy, and the birth and development of their daughter. The letters frequently address financial support, household concerns, education and career plans (including postwar legal studies), and the management of separation during military service. Both William and Elizabeth express affection, reassurance, and emotional support, often accompanied by discussion of gifts, photographs, packages, and shared plans for the future. The series also documents social, cultural, and religious life, including observances of Jewish holidays, attendance at services, participation in recreational activities such as movies, concerts, sports, and social events, and interactions with fellow servicemen, friends, and family members. Figures such as Herman Abady, Buck Wright, Larry Smith, and members of the Goldsmith family appear throughout as part of William’s military and social networks. Additional materials include telegrams, V-Mail messages, postcards, photographs, clippings, and other enclosures that contextualize both home-front and military experiences.
