Letters Between William H. Sager, Family, and Friends

 Series

Scope and Contents

This series consists of correspondence among William H. Sager, his brother Ben Sager, and other members of the Sager and Mopsik families, documenting family communication during William’s World War II military service and related deployments. The materials include letters, postcards, V-Mail, invitations, and administrative documents that trace William’s experiences from pre-deployment preparation through overseas service, hospitalization, and postwar assignments in Guadalcanal and China. The correspondence with Ben Sager forms the core of the series and provides detailed accounts of William’s military training, deployments, and daily life in service. Topics include equipment and uniform preparation, housing and camp arrangements, travel between stations, promotions, professional responsibilities, and administrative duties. Letters from overseas describe living conditions, climate, food, language barriers, and interactions with local populations, as well as reflections on morale, homesickness, health, and the emotional impact of separation from family. William also discusses broader wartime developments, his perceptions of the conflict’s progress, and efforts to shield his family from distressing news. Additional correspondence expands the family network represented in the series and includes letters exchanged with Rae Berman, Elizabeth Mopsik Sager, and other relatives. These items address family relationships, home-front updates, marriage and domestic life, and coordination of communication across multiple family members. Administrative materials such as change-of-address notices, insurance documentation, and mail routing instructions reflect the logistical challenges of wartime correspondence. Ephemera including postcards, invitations, a business card, and a birth announcement further document significant personal milestones such as military graduations, family births, and relocations.
