Letters from William H. Sager to Elizabeth Mopsik Sager, July 25 - September 23, 1942
Scope and Contents
This folder contains 11 letters and 1 empty envelope sent by William H. Sager to his wife, Elizabeth Mopsik Sager, documenting their correspondence during an extended period of wartime separation. The letters emphasize William’s consistent reassurance and emotional support, as he repeatedly urges Elizabeth not to worry, affirms his love and longing, and encourages her to take pride in being a Marine’s wife. Interspersed with these sentiments are reflections on censorship and delayed mail, updates on his health, rumors of incoming letters, and references to holidays and milestones, including birthdays, New Year’s, and the Day of Atonement. William also shares observations from military life, such as a Navy ward room tradition involving officers and celebratory drinks, learning some Japanese, and encounters with acquaintances and family members, including Harold and Jimmie Kardos. An incomplete letter survives with only its second page, and an empty addressed envelope is also present.
