Letters from William H. Sager to Elizabeth Mopsik Sager, October 27 - November 22, 1942
Scope and Contents
This folder contains 7 letters from William H. Sager to his wife, Elizabeth Mopsik Sager, documenting William’s responses to frequent incoming mail, his awareness that Elizabeth has learned of his presence on Guadalcanal, and his reactions to rumors about a possible return home by Christmas. Throughout the correspondence, William offers reassurance, encouragement, and affectionate language, while also addressing practical and personal matters like insurance, limited time to write, and the morale-boosting effect of Elizabeth’s letters. Several letters reference connections within their social circle, including correspondence received by fellow servicemen and news shared by Eleanor regarding efforts to locate Captain Putnam or his wife, as well as Elizabeth’s teaching position and thoughts about leaving it. One letter alludes to a skirmish with Japanese forces between September 9 and 22, an experience William hopes to forget.
