Letters from William H. Sager to Elizabeth Mopsik Sager, November 16 - December 24, 1942
Scope and Contents
This folder contains 12 letters and one empty envelope from William H. Sager to his wife, Elizabeth Mopsik Sager, documenting daily life, reflections, and emotional support during his wartime service in late 1942. The correspondence describes William’s living conditions in the field, including bathing and washing clothes in the river, sleeping on cots or on the ground, resting on beaches, reading magazines, playing cards, and holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas. William frequently reassures Elizabeth, offering affectionate encouragement, and urges her to take care of herself, while also addressing practical and personal matters such as Marine Corps pins, war bonds, family visits, teaching vacations, promotions, smoking cessation, and the passage of their seven months of marriage. Several letters and V-Mails reflect religious sentiment and censorship, and one includes a hand-drawn cartoon of a monkey. Additional items include references to fellow servicemen and acquaintances, as well as reflections on periods of relative safety versus danger.
