Letters of William H. Sager with Elizabeth Mopsik Sager and Family, July 15, 1942 - May 6, 1943, October 4, 1945
Scope and Contents
This folder contains 16 letters primarily documenting the wartime separation of William H. Sager and his wife, Elizabeth Mopsik Sager, along with several letters from friends and family members. The materials include numerous letters and one V-Mail from William to Elizabeth that reflect daily military life while awaiting transportation and later duties, touching on hikes, reading, movies, music, shortages of stationery, changes in living arrangements, court-martial proceedings among fellow servicemen, transfers to the Casual Company, censorship, and the uncertainty surrounding D-Day. William frequently reassures Elizabeth, encourages her to be brave, discusses allotments, exams, and teaching plans, and expresses homesickness, affection, and pride in her. He also references fellow servicemen and acquaintances such as Herman, Larry Smith, Jimmy Kardos, and others, as well as his own creative efforts, including writing a short story. Additional correspondence includes letters addressed to Elizabeth from Opal and Rae Berman that provide home-front news, reflections on marriage and teaching, updates on relatives, reactions to the war, as well as a letter from William to his parents or mother and father-in-law expressing love and missing home. A partial letter page further documents the line-crossing ceremony and censorship.
