Letters Between William H. Sager, Elizabeth Mopsik Sager, and Friends, December 5, 1944 - January 31, 1945
Scope and Contents
This folder contains 10 letters and 1 V-Mail from William H. Sager to his wife, Elizabeth Mopsik Sager, along with 1 letter from Larry to William and 1 piece of Indian currency. The correspondence documents William’s transit through India and his early establishment at camp, describing sightseeing in the city, native bazaars and shops, diplomatic dinners, meals, quarters, and interactions with naval officers and enlisted men. He writes frequently about finances, including collecting back pay, sending checks and money home, PX supplies, and arranging subscriptions and mail forwarding. Other recurring subjects include clothing and equipment such as boots and uniforms, travel preparations, camp assignments, his changing addresses, and his assumption of a new command with a new title. William also reflects on movies, books, synagogue visits, radio broadcasts, and daily routines while repeatedly urging Elizabeth to care for herself during her pregnancy. The folder also includes a V-Mail written while William was still in transit, emphasizing his health, food, and concern for Elizabeth, as well as a letter from Larry describing hospital work and suggesting William transfer to the Army. A one-rupee note from the Government of India is also preserved with the correspondence.
