Letters Between William H. Sager, Elizabeth Mopsik, and Family, January 14 - February 11, 1945

 File — Box: AR00057, Folder: 21

Scope and Contents

This folder contains 10 letters and 1 V-Mail from William H. Sager to his wife, Elizabeth Mopsik Sager, as well as 1 additional letter to Goldie concerning William’s whereabouts. The correspondence documents William’s arrival in India (actually China) and his early experiences adjusting to his new post, including descriptions of his stay at a Navy hostel, his flight, and his reception by Navy personnel. He frequently discusses camp conditions such as food quality, living quarters, recreation spaces, and efforts to improve his unit, as well as his interactions with fellow officers, including medical staff and visiting Marines. William writes about daily routines, meals, haircuts, reading, music, and walks, alongside excursions to nearby cities, native nightclubs, and cultural events such as student performances. He also mentions purchasing souvenirs and perfume, both as gifts and for others, and asks Elizabeth’s opinion on items to send home. Throughout the letters, he expresses concern for Elizabeth’s health, especially during her pregnancy, and encourages her to take care of herself, pursue activities like music lessons, and stay in contact with family. Additional topics include mail delays, lack of stationery, weather conditions, language learning, and his satisfaction with his current assignment. The included V-Mail briefly notes his purchase of perfume, while the letter to Goldie reflects uncertainty among correspondents about William’s travel to India.
