Newsletters, Religious Programs, and Sketches, 1945

This folder contains newsletters, religious programs, sketches, a photograph, and literary works collected or created by Andrew J. Blair during World War II. Included are issues of The Oily Rag (Vol 3, nos. 1-34, February 7 – March 17, 1945, with some issues not present), a daily newsletter produced by Construction Battalion Detachment 1045 at Davisville, Rhode Island, and Mate Slate (Vol. 1, nos. 3, 4, 49, 50, and 52, August 10 – October 1945), a newsletter of the 147th Naval Construction Battalion on Okinawa. The newsletters document military operations, world events, camp activities, entertainment schedules, sports, religious services, and Seabee life, and frequently feature Blair's cartoons. Also present are chaplain information forms with Blair's sketches, worship service programs, a Thanksgiving menu from the 147th Naval Construction Battalion, a photograph of a serviceman playing the piano, a graphite sketch of a chaplain's lecture, and creative writings, including the poem "A Seabee" and the humorous piece "A Seabee's Wedding."
