Scope and Contents

The Charles Grojean Collection contains personal and professional correspondence of Charles Grojean’s from 1945-1975. Within this collection there are photographs of medal presentations and multiple ships including the USS Bream, USS Pomodon, USS Bashaw and the USS Bluegill. There are also photos of men in uniform at the Naval submarine school and several group pictures that have been taken throughout Grojean's career. Within the collection there are awards of merit, letters of recommendation, travel orders, fitness reports, duty promotions, records of leave as well as a guest list to naval parties.

Biographical / Historical

Charles David Grojean, 1923 – 2008, was the Executive Director of the Admiral Nimitz Foundation and served in the Navy from 1945 to 1975, retiring as Rear Admiral.

Rear Admiral Grojean attended the United States Naval Academy from 1942 to 1945. Upon graduation, he served in destroyers for three years and in the amphibious forces for one year. In 1949, Rear Admiral Grojean entered the Submarine School in New London, Connecticut.

Post Submarine School, Rear Admiral Grojean served in the Atlantic onboard the submarines U.S.S. Threadfin and USS Toro. He was then assigned to the Executive Department at the United States Naval Academy for two years. In 1955, he served as the Executive Officer of the submarine USS Caiman and USS Bream. In 1957, Rear Admiral Grojean took command of the USS Angler.

Rear Admiral Grojean completed the Nuclear Power and Polaris Weapon Systems training in 1959. Afterwards, he served as the Executive Officer of the USS Patrick Henry for two years before taking command of the nuclear attack submarine USS Barb in 1961. In 1964, Rear Admiral Grojean served as the Commanding Officer of the Polaris submarine USS Thomas A. Edison for two years. From 1966 to 1969, he served on the staff of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and in the Office of the Secretary of Defense.

Rear Admiral Grojean married Joan Stewart, with whom he had two sons and two daughters. In 1990, Rear Admiral Grojean became Executive Director of the Admiral Nimitz Foundation. Rear Admiral Grojean continued his work with the Admiral Nimitz Foundation until his death in 2008.
