Scope and Contents

The Lewis E. Wallace Papers contain various correspondence of Lewis E. Wallace from his involvement in World War II and enlistment into the U.S. Merchant Marines. These correspondence spans Wallace’s enlistment and the beginning of the post-war period. There is correspondence regarding Wallace’s physical examination and an application between the War Shipping Administration and Wallace. This collection also includes documents and pamphlets directed at helping soldiers adjust to society after the war. There are also newspaper covers that regard the end of the Pacific War sent from Wallace to his mother and a copied photo of Lewis E. Wallace.

Biographical / Historical

Lewis Everette Wallace (December 22nd, 1925 – July 3rd, 2014) was from Nederland, Texas. Wallace enlisted in January of 1944, joined the U.S. Navy, and served in the Merchant Marines. During his time in the Merchant Marines, Wallace was involved with the USS General H.W. Butner. Wallace was honorably discharged from the Merchant Marines following the war’s closure and continued to work in the oil industry.
