The James W. Cockrell Collection, 1940 – 1957, consists of black-and-white photographs, James Cockrell’s address book, an oversized map titled Hammond’s War, United States Navy documents, newsletters, a certificate of recognition, and correspondence. This collection contains materials related to James W. Cockrell’s military service onboard the USS White Plains (CVE-66).

Biographical / Historical

James W. Cockrell served in the United States Navy during World War II where he obtained the rank of Seaman first class while serving aboard the USS White Plains (CVE-66).

Abstract

The James W. Cockrell Collection, 1940 – 1957, consists of black-and-white photographs, a journal, an oversized map, United States Navy documents, newsletters, a certificate, and correspondence. This collection contains materials related to James W. Cockrell’s military service onboard the USS White Plains (CVE-66).

Arrangement

The James W. Cockrell Collection contains 8 Full 1/2" tab legal-size folders and two oversized folders that have been housed within one archival banker box, one oversized box, and one flat file storage totaling 0.25 linear feet. The collection has been intellectually separated into 3 series and organized into the following arrangements: I. Photographs, II. Publications, III. Maps.

I. Photographs. Contains 2 Full 1/2” tab legal-size folders and one custom oversized folder totaling less than 0.1 linear feet. This folder includes a total of 39 black-and-white photographs of the USS White Plains, the USS St. Lo, and the USS Gambier Bay under fire in the Philippines.

II. Official Naval Documents, Publications, and Personal Documents. Contains 6 Full 1/2” tab legal-size folders totaling 0.2 linear. This folder contains one issue of Time Weekly News Magazine, one issue of Steck’s Service Salute, 4 issues of The Daily Plainsman, and 7 issues of the Plan for the Day from the USS White Plains (CVE-66), and one book titled “The Bluejackets’ Manual 1940”.

III. Maps. Contains one oversized map within a custom flat file folder housed within the flat file drawers. This folder contains one Hammond’s War Map and a Looking Ahead pamphlet totaling less than 0.1 linear feet.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Laura L. Cockrell Bloebaum donated these materials to the Center for Pacific War Studies and the National Museum of the Pacific War on December 29, 2015.

Separated Materials

3D artifacts have been separated from this collection, including a pillowcase with James W. Cockrell’s name and the USS White Plains stamped on the cloth. Contact the archivist for further information.

Processing Information

The initial processing, creation of this finding aid, and the rehousing of the collection were completed by Jacob Pritsker in October 2024.

The following materials have been sent to UNT for digitization in boxes UNT0015 and OS0007: 2016.002.001 - 2016.002.039 and 2016.002.041 - 2016.002.062.
