Scope and Contents

The John Neal Carter Papers center around daily newsletters published for the United States battleship USS New Mexico (BB-40) titled "The Queen’s Daily News" from January 1945 to October 1945. These newsletters provide sailors aboard the USS New Mexico with recent events and relevant news worldwide. Each issue also includes black-and-white comic strips with titles such as Blondie, Lil Abner, Donald Duck, Terry, Dick Tracy, Joe Palooka, Mickey Finn,... and Red Ryder. Supplemental material in this collection includes extensive historical and background information on the USS New Mexico (BB-40), a USS New Mexico Thanksgiving Day menu, and three newspaper clippings related to the war in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre. This collection also contains a single photograph featuring Lt. Fred Edward Holt.

Supplemental materials included in this collection includes religious documents from the USS New Mexico (BB-40), background information on the USS New Mexico (BB-40), correspondence, newspaper clippings collected by Carter, and a black-and-white photograph.
