Abstract

The Harmon L. Graff Collection documents the experiences of U.S. and Allied military personnel who were present at the Japanese surrender ceremony aboard the USS Missouri on September 2, 1945, as well as Graff’s postwar efforts to identify, contact, and obtain autographs and written attestations from those who witnessed the event. Materials span mounted photographs, signed portraits, autographs, notes, correspondence, newsletters, and commemorative items.

One black-and-white photograph of the 44-088 United States Navy class roster with one officer and 283 enlisted sailors arranged on eleven rows of risers. The enlisted sailors wear blue naval uniforms, while the officer wears a dress uniform. A small black and white sign has been placed in front that reads, “44-088”. On the back of the photograph, along the top edge, is adhesive tape. Small tears are along the edges.
