Biography

Allen Young Delaney, MD, was born on July 26, 1917, just outside of Chattanooga, Tennessee, in the town of Arrington, Tennessee, to Mary and Joseph DeLaney. At the age of 15, Allen Y. DeLaney attended the University of Arkansas and, at the age of 17, attended medical school at the University of Tulane. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Dr. DeLaney volunteered as a surgeon for the Navy. He was then assigned to basic training in Little Creek, Virginia, for amphibious landing vessels before being deployed to the Southwest Pacific. Following World War II, Dr. DeLaney stayed in the Pacific until the Spring of 1947. It was during his time in San Diego that he treated Margo Duncan, a young naval code breaker who had broken her ankle during a thunderstorm. They later married in June 1947. In 1950, Dr. DeLaney was recalled to active service to serve in the Korean War. After completing his service, he moved to Gainesville, Florida, where he established a successful general surgical practice specializing in upper body trauma of the neck and upper body. In 1988, Dr. Allen Young DeLaney retired after practicing medicine for 52 years.

Dr. DeLaney passed away on March 25, 2004, surrounded by his family in Gainesville, Florida. He is remembered by his wife, Lou, and his six children: Philip DeLaney, Bruce DeLaney, Allen DeLaney, Stewart White, Joseph White, and Mary Elizabeth Johnston.
