Scope and Contents

The Allen Y. Delaney Collection, 1942 – 2004, consists of documents, records, correspondence, photographs, and official Navy records related to his honorable service throughout the Pacific theater during World War II. Materials within this collection have been intellectually separated into five series that contain material related to Dr. Allen Y. Delaney’s personal life and military service with both the Naval Reserve and the Navy. This collection is housed within two Hollinger boxes, totaling 0.8 linear feet of space.

Biographical / Historical

Allen Y. DeLaney (July 26, 1917 – March 25, 2004) was born to Mary and Joseph DeLaney in Arrington, Tennessee. At 15, DeLaney attended the University of Arkansas, and by 17, he was enrolled at Tulane University Medical School. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Dr. DeLaney volunteered as a surgeon for the United States Navy and was assigned to basic training in Little Creek, Virginia, for amphibious landing vessels. Serving in the Southwest Pacific, DeLaney took part in campaigns such as New Georgia, New Guinea, and Guam while serving as a Lieutenant Commander aboard an LST. After World War II, Dr. DeLaney remained in the Pacific until spring 1947. When he returned to San Diego, California, he treated Margo Duncan, whom he later married in June 1947. Following the war, DeLaney served as a Medical Officer during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1955. Afterwards, Dr. DeLaney moved to Gainesville, Florida, where he established a general surgical practice, specializing in upper body trauma of the neck and upper body. In 1988, Dr. DeLaney retired after practicing medicine for 52 years.

Arrangement

The Allen Y. DeLaney Collection is housed within two hollinger boxes totaling 0.8 linear feet. This collection has been intellectually separated into five series that consists of the following: I. Personal and Biographic Papers, II. Navy Medical Document and Correspondence, III. Newsletters, IV. Correspondence, and V. Photographs.

I. Personal and Biographic Papers. Contains 4 Full 1/2" Tab Legal Size File Folders totaling 0.1 linear feet.

II. Navy Medical Document and Correspondence. Contains 15 Full 1/2" Tab Legal Size File Folders totaling 0.4 linear feet.

III. Newsletters. Contains 3 Full 1/2" Tab Legal Size File Folders totaling 0.1 linear feet.

IV. Correspondence. Contains 5 Full 1/2" Tab Legal Size File Folders totaling 0.1 linear feet.

V. Photographs. Contains 2 Full 1/2" Tab Legal Size File Folders totaling 0.1 linear feet.
