19th Battalion, Special Training Unit Documents, 1941 - 1943, 1995
Scope and Contents
This folder contains documents related to the Special Training Unit (STU) of the 19th Battalion at the Armored Replacement Training Center in Fort Knox, Kentucky, including analyses of problems within the STU; case studies of individual trainees; demographic tables; organizational diagrams; and materials outlining the unit's structure, training programs, evaluation procedures, and post-training disposition. It also includes extensive administrative records such as General and Special Orders, memoranda on personnel assignments, graduate placement, transfer requirements, and changes to March Orders; Section VIII separation procedures and board proceedings; psychiatric evaluation charts; and correspondence among officers at Fort Knox, Army Ground Forces, and other commands regarding substandard personnel, Class V men, and psychoneurotic cases. Additional materials include academic and instructional documents, blank and annotated evaluation sheets, a dismounted march plan with map sketch, Red Cross reports and case correspondence, numerical breakdowns of battalion personnel, a War Department literacy and arithmetic practice booklet, a teacher’s manual for adult elementary instruction, mobilization training program information, and handwritten and typed lectures by Col. Robert E. Byrns, including commentary on Beetle Bailey.
