The L.B. Hardy Papers contain records, training materials, publications, photographs, maps, and ephemera documenting the World War II service of L.B. Winfred Hardy in the United States Army Air Forces. The collection includes military service records, newsletters, newspapers, instructional manuals, pre-flight examinations, navigation charts, communications references, and personal materials related to aviation training, military administration, transportation across the Pacific, service in the Philippines, and postwar demobilization. It also includes publications from military and civilian organizations, photographs of Army Air Forces personnel and aircraft, and a small number of personal and devotional items.
The collection provides extensive documentation of Army Air Forces aviation training and radio operations during World War II. Materials cover aerodynamics, meteorology, aircraft systems, navigation, radio communications, operating signals, and military communications networks in the United States and the Pacific. Notable are handwritten notebooks used during B-29 radio operations and a group of aerial reconnaissance photographs of Japan depicting bombing targets, post-strike assessments, and urban and industrial damage. Together, these materials offer insight into the technical training, operational responsibilities, and daily experiences of Army Air Forces personnel serving in the Pacific Theater.
