Scope and Contents

The Deyo McCullough collection contains military paperwork, photographs, patches, programs, and two scrapbooks from McCullough’s time as a Bandsman for the 27th Infantry Division Band in the Army. The collection features photographs of Deyo and Army band images, alongside his enlistment paperwork, honorable discharge paperwork, a Christmas program, and an Infantry training guide. Additionally, it contains two scrapbooks: the first compiled with materials from the war, and the second crafted by his wife Cathryn, focusing on their family.

Biographical / Historical

Deyo Dale McCullough, 1919-2013, served in the United States Army, undertaking various roles during his enlistment in World War II. Following basic training at Camp Hood, he assumed the position of intelligence observer. McCullough’s most significant contribution was as a Bandsman for the 27th Infantry Division Band in Okinawa and Niigata, Japan. Within the 27th Infantry Band, McCullough played the tube and later transitioned to the sousaphone for the 76th Army Ground Forces Band in Sendai, Japan. Additionally, he played the string bass in the dance band. McCullough had the opportunity to perform at dances, shows, and on the radio, touring different military installations throughout Japan during his wartime service.

He married Cathryn L. Linder, and together they had two children.
