Scope and Contents

The Sadd Family Papers, 1944-1945; 2019, comprise over 500 letters exchanged between Edgar F. Sadd and his wife, Lois Sadd, along with other related materials. These letters offer insight into life on the homefront, training in the Navy, world events, and familial separation.

In addition to the letters exchanged between Lois and Edgar, the collection includes letters from their friends and family. It also contains newspaper clippings and newsletters that were included with the correspondence. Transcriptions of all of the letters, including those that were not donated, are part of the collection. Digital copies of the transcriptions are also present.

Biographical / Historical

Edgar F. Sadd, born February 2, 1907, in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, served in the United States Navy as a Radio Tech from May 1944 to January 1946. He trained at Great Lakes Naval Training Center, Illinois; Theodore Herzl High School in Chicago; Grove City College in Pennsylvania; and the Naval Research Labs in Washington, D.C. Sadd was then sent to Tubabao, Philippines, and Manila, Philippines, for duty.

A brief timeline of Sadd's time in the Navy is as follows:

May 21 - June 23, 1944 : Edgar participated in Boot Camp at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center

July 6 - July 21, 1944 : Edgar was in "On-Going-Unit" (OGU) at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center while awaiting assignment

July 21 - September 16, 1944 : Edgar trained at the Theodore Herzl High School in Chicago in Platoon 60, Platoon 70, and Platoon 83

September 16 - December 9, 1944 : Edgar attended Primary Radio School at Grove City College in Grove City, Pennsylvania

December 9, 1944 - July 13, 1945 : Edgar attended Radio Material School, otherwise known as Bellevue, at the Naval Research Labs in Washington, D.C.

July 25 - August 13, 1945 : Edgar traveled from Washington, D.C. to Shoemaker, California, and then awaited draft for the Pacific

August 13 - September 8, 1945 : Edgar sailed from San Francisco to Tubabao, Guiuan, Samar, Philippines.

September 8 - October 14, 1945 : Edgar was stationed in Tubabao, awaiting assignment, while running a beer hall

October 14 - November 14 : Edgar was transferred to ten miles north of Manila where he served at a Navy Transmitter station

November 14, 1945 - January 15, 1945 : Edgar left the transmitter site and sailed home Lois E. Bradley, born on June 16, 1910, in Fair Oaks, Pennsylvania, was a music teacher and, later, a substitute teacher. Edgar and Lois met around 1933 and were married on February 20, 1937. At the time, Edgar was working at Gimbels in Pittsburgh, and Lois was teaching at Leetsdale,Pennsylvania. In the late 1930s, they moved to Sewickly, Pennnsylvania, and settled into a rented house where their sons, Billy and Tom, were born.

After the war, Edgar returned to work at Gimbels and spent the rest of his career as a salesman. Edgar died on July 13, 1981, while Lois died on March 24, 1996. They are both buried at Sewickley Cemetery.

Arrangement

This collection consists of one bankers box and one Hollinger box divided into three series:

Series I: Correspondence from Edgar to Lois Series II: Correspondence from Lois to Edgar Series III: Transcribed letters

The collection retains original order as received by the donor. All letters have been arranged by date and separated by letter sender.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Bill Sadd donated the Sadd Family Papers to the National Museum of the Pacific War's Center for Pacific War Studies through two donations in 2010 and 2011.
