Richard W. Ziegler Collection
Scope and Contents
The Richard W. Ziegler collection consists of photographs, documents, scrapbook pages, and materials gathered by Richard W. “Dick” Ziegler during his military career as a Corporal with the United States Marine Corps. The photographs included in this collection are either black-and-white or sepia-toned and feature various topics. These topics include Korean workers, United States Marines in uniforms, marines training at Linda Vista in the southern California desert, living conditions for Marines at Tinian, Richard W. Ziegler in Uniform, Marines posing together, and native Pacific islanders. The documents included in this collection feature Richard W. Ziegler’s USMC honorable discharge paperwork, certificates, development plans for Nukufetau Atoll, and identification cards related to his military career. Included in this collection is a letter written by an indigenous island boy to Richard Ziegler's mother with the purpose of being able to practice his english. This collection prominently features scrapbook pages with photographs of key locations throughout Tinian, Marines training at Linda Vista, United States Marines marching together, American and Japanese aircraft, Island indigenous, and the 17th aircraft artillery base. The final portion of this collection are three publications titled “Leatherneck,” “Story of Marine Skytillerymen,” and “Tinian Then and Now…”

Biographical / Historical
Richard W. “Dick" Ziegler was born in Leominster, Massachusetts, on February 20, 1922, to Frederick and Agnes Ziegler of Fitchburg, Massachusetts. In 1940, Mr. Ziegler graduated from Fitchburg High School before joining the United States Marine Corps, where he served in the South Pacific from 1942 to 1945, achieving the rank of Corporal. After an honorable discharge in 1946, Ziegler worked in radio broadcasting for 33 years before marrying his wife, Elizabeth (Betty) Ziegler, and moving to Kissimmee, Florida, where he worked for Walt Disney World. Ziegler retired after 10 years of working as an engineer for the Walt Disney Railroad in the Magic Kingdom. Ziegler passed away on May 6, 2011, in Kissimmee, Florida.

Abstract
The Richard W. Ziegler collection consists of photographs, documents, scrapbook pages, and materials gathered by Richard W. “Dick” Ziegler during his military career as a Corporal with the United States Marine Corps. Photographs included within this collection feature United States Marines training in Linda Vista, California; US Marines in Tinian; indigenous natives in the Asiatic-Pacific theatre; American and Japanese aircraft; and 17th Aircraft artillery base. Documents include Ziegler's discharge paperwork, a letter, certificates, and development plans for Nukufetau. Three official publications collected by Ziegler during his life have been included within this collection.

The Richard W. Ziegler Collection contains three Full 1/2” tab legal-size folders and one small white envelope housed within one archival-sized box totaling 0.2 linear feet. Due to its size, this collection has not been intellectually separated into series.

3D artifacts have been separated from this collection, including the following accessioned item(s): A Kabar knife related to the service of Richard B. Ziegler, the knife’s sheath, and a broken handle top; a wooden board featuring a United States Marine in dress blue uniform blowing into a bugle under the word “Snaps."
