Scope and Contents

The Robert F. Asher Papers include a scrapbook documenting Asher’s service in the United States Naval Reserve during World War II in the Pacific Theater. The scrapbook features photographs of naval servicemen, naval vessels, military encampments, combat-damaged landscapes, and military infrastructure. The photographs document Asher’s experiences in Pearl Harbor, Okinawa, Ie Shima, and Shanghai, China, as well as Yokohama and Tokyo during the Allied occupation of Japan. Also included are Chief Petty Officer ephemera, foreign currency, postcards from Japan, and newspaper headlines documenting major events of World War II, along with loose photographs from the scrapbook.

Biographical / Historical

Robert F. Asher served as a Chief Yeoman in the United States Naval Reserve during World War II in the Pacific Theater. Before deployment, Asher was stationed at Treasure Island, California, and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. During the war, he served aboard the USS President Monroe (AP-104) and the USS Goshen (APA-108) and was stationed on Okinawa and Le Shima. After the war, Asher was assigned to the Occupation of Japan, where he visited Yokohama and Tokyo, as well as Shanghai, China. Certified to carry a camera, Asher photographed military life and his travels during and after the war.
