Scope and Contents

The Renwick W. Barr Collection contains two envelopes with postmarks from the USS Nimitz (CVAN-68) and decorative stamps commemorating the USS Nimitz’s first day in commission, May 3, 1975. The envelopes are adorned with postage stamps commemorating Expo ‘74 and the Mariner 10 space probe.

Biographical / Historical

The USS Nimitz (CVN-68) is a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and the lead ship of the Nimitz class. She was commissioned on May 3, 1975, at Naval Station Norfolk. She was originally designated as CVAN-68 but was redesignated to CVN-68 on June 30, 1975. Both the USS Nimitz and the Nimitz class are named after Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz. The USS Nimitz was involved in Operation Eagle Claw, the Gulf War, Iraq War, and the War in Afghanistan.
