Lawrence H. W. Schain Papers
Scope and Contents
The Lawrence H. W. Schain Papers contain materials documenting Schain’s service in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean War, with an emphasis on Marine Corps aviation and operations in the Pacific Theater. The collection includes scrapbooks, photographs, newspaper clippings, military documents, pamphlets, reunion materials, and commemorative books collected and maintained by Schain between 1940 and 1992. Materials include photographs of military personnel, naval vessels, aircraft, combat operations, wartime destruction, and significant events such as the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima and the Japanese surrender aboard the USS Missouri (BB-63).
The collection also includes personal materials documenting Schain’s family life and military experiences, such as family photographs, poems, engagement announcements, identification cards, training certificates, and inspection reports. Additional materials pertain to Marine Aircraft Group 61 and include reunion programs, rosters, and commemorative books that chronicle the unit’s wartime activities and postwar reunions. Scanned chapters from Robert Sherrod’s History of Marine Corps Aviation in World War II are also included.

Biographical / Historical
Staff Sergeant Lawrence “Larry” H. W. Schain was born on December 13, 1917, in New Brunswick, New Jersey. On August 25, 1942, Schain entered the United States Marine Corps at the rank of private and completed the Aviation Radioman course at the Navy Department, Bureau of Naval Personnel Service School in April 1943. Schain was discharged from the United States Marine Corps on February 13, 1946, and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserves – 3B on August 17, 1947. On October 7, 1950, Schain was recalled to active duty to fight in the Korean War. Schain died on September 4, 1996, and is buried in the Houston National Cemetery in Houston, Texas.

Abstract
The Lawrence H. W. Schain Papers contain two scrapbooks created by Schain during his military service, photographs, newspaper clippings, documents, and bound books. This collection also contains black-and-white scans of Robert Sherrod's book "Marine Corps Aviation in World War II". Schain collected these materials during his service with the United States Marine Corps in World War II and the Korean War.
Arrangement
The Lawrence H. W. Schain collection contains twelve legal-size folders, two scrapbooks, and two books housed in an archival banker box totaling 0.7 linear feet. This collection has been intellectually separated into three series: I. Scrapbooks and Photographs, II. Marine Aircraft Group 61, and III. History of Marine Corps Aviation in World War II.
