Abstract

The Arick Family Collection is a collection of letters, photographs, work documents, and memorabilia relating to Millard B. Arick, his wife Lucille, and their daughter Ann. Much of the material in this collection relating to Millard consists of work documents pertaining to his employment with the Humble Oil & Refining Company in McCamey and Midland, Texas, as well as his employment with the Standard Oil of New Jersey in Venezuela.

Millard Boston Arick (1899-1982) first gained military experience while serving in the United States Army Signal Corps in France during World War I. Upon being discharged, Arick attended the University of Texas at Austin in 1924, where he obtained his bachelor’s degree in 1927 and his master’s degree in 1928, both in geology. Following his graduation, Arick was employed by the Humble Oil and Refining Co., where he worked in McCamey, Texas, before moving to Midland, Texas, in 1935. Between 1937 and 1942, Arick was employed by the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey and worked primarily in Venezuela. In 1942, Arick enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served with the 8th Air Force in England. Arick continued to serve with the Air Force Reserve and retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1974. Upon his return to the United States after World War II, Arick resumed his work as an independent geologist and oil operator and is credited with discovering a large oil field in Floyd County, Texas, now named Arick Field.

Lucille A. Arick (1909-2002) attended Simmons University in 1926 before graduating from the University of Texas at Austin in 1929. While attending UT Austin, Lucille met and married Millard Boston Arick. During World War II, Lucille served as a clerk for the local Selective Service office in Midland, Texas. At the conclusion of the war, Lucille spent her time as a homemaker, farmer, and businesswoman, before retiring in 1980 to travel the world with her daughter Ann.

Millard and Lucille had one daughter, Ann E. Arick.
