Scope and Contents

The Danny Whatley Papers contain World War II-era correspondence, commemorative ephemera, and a signed publication documenting military service in the Pacific Theater. The collection includes a letter from Wake Island written in November 1941 about civilian defense work before the United States entered World War II. It also includes a commemorative envelope from the first issue of Battle Scenes on Iwo Jima, signed by Charles W. Lindberg, the first flag raiser on Iwo Jima. Also included is a signed copy of Admiral Halsey's Story, bearing the signatures of Fleet Admiral William F. Halsey and Vice Admiral Thomas Ross Cooley. Together, these materials document the Pacific War through personal correspondence, commemorative memorabilia, and military biography.

Danny Whatley was a New Mexico resident with an interest in the history of the Pacific Theater during World War II. He assembled a collection of commemorative materials related to Fleet Admiral William F. Halsey, the Iwo Jima flag raisers, and Wake Island.
