World War, 1939-1945

The Dimmitt K. White Papers detail Dimmitt K. White's service during World War II, including photographs of military and naval life, personal and military records, and printed materials related to the 1st Cavalry Division, as well as items reflecting his prewar and postwar experiences.

The Earl W. Toepperwein Collection Collection, 1908 - 1941, consists of documents, oversized maps, and a photo album of black-and-white and color photographs. It contains material related to Earl Webb Toepperwein’s personal life, military service with the United States Signal Corps, and eventual service in England.

The Edgar McElroy Collection features documents, photographs, and newspaper articles about Lt. Col. McElroy and his role as a B-25 Mitchell pilot who participated in the Doolittle Raids.

The Edward M. Doran Collection, 1938 - 1996, consists of documents, records, correspondence, official Navy documents, certifications, organization memberships, magazines, newspaper clippings, and biographies on Edward M. Doran. This collection contains material related to retired lieutenant commander Edward Doran’s personal life and military service. Within the collection, there is a special focus on Edward Doran’s experience surviving Pearl Harbor.

The Floyd Kelly Jr. Collection, 1938 – 2008, consists of illustrations drawn by Mr. Kelly Jr., a book, letters, pamphlets, color photographs, black-and-white photographs, postcards, poems, certificates, newspapers, and a scrapbook. This collection contains materials related to Floyd Kelly Jr.’s personal life and military service with the United States Navy and the USS Napa (APA-157).

The Frances Nimitz Zehmer contains photographs, documents, publications, and correspondence related to Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz’s life, career, and the Nimitz family.

The Francis Derringer Collection contains a newspaper clipping from the Pittsburgh Press, June 28, 1945, titled “Sadness Follows Happiness For Family of Interned GI: Neighbor Brings Word Japs Had Him, Then Wire Advises He Was Drowned.”

The Frederick C. Younghans Collection consists of 3 folders of 2D materials, including monographs, a photograph, a flight logbook, an aviation map, and U.S. Navy service records from 1943-1946 relating to the service of Lt. Frederick C. Younghans. The materials primarily cover Lt. Younghans' activity in the United States at a series of Naval Air Stations, but also include information about overseas deployment as a PV-1/PV-2 pilot in the Pacific region.

The Henry J. Cates Jr. Collection contains photographs regarding Technical Sergeant Henry J. Cates Jr. and his service as a Technical Sergeant of water purification for the 1307 Engineers in New Guinea.

The Hermann A. Greissle Collection contains Tagalog Times editions covering frontline news from May to August 1945 of the Pacific War. Also included is a picture of Greissle and, as well as two of his graphite pictures depicting combat.
